Richard Morris (Cello)

Richard took up the cello in his mid-to-late twenties.  His parents were "reasonably musical" – his father played the piano.  One of his brothers too is musical and belongs to an amateur opera company.

Richard went to school at Forest Hill.  After that he went to University College, Cardiff to study philosophy and pure mathematics.  From mathematics he went on to work in computers.  In the 70s this meant writing software for debugging programs and in the 90s he helped a major insurance company to overcome the ‘millennium bug’!  Richard now works as a gift administrator for the charity Crusaid.

Richard lives with his partner and among his favourite non-musical interests he counts the theatre, travel and skiing.

Richard used to play with the Blackheath String Orchestra, but now devotes much of his playing time to the SSO.  He likes many of the composers from the classical repertoire such as Handel, Bach, Haydn, and Tchaikovsky, but his favourites are Rameau and Shostakovich.  Since he joined the SSO he particularly liked the clarinet solo of the Mozart Concerto which the orchestra performed in November 2003.
