James Ross studied at Oxford University (M.A., Modern History, 1993; M.St., Music, 1994; D.Phil. – French Opera, 1998), winning the Sir Donald Tovey Prize, and was a finalist in the BBC Philharmonic’s 1998 Conducting Competition. Current positions include with Oxford University Sinfonietta and with St. Albans Symphony Orchestra, with whom he negotiated successfully a £17,500 collaboration with the City of London Sinfonia, funded by the Arts Council; he has also conducted in Austria, Bosnia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Sri Lanka and USA. His repertoire covers over 600 works including major symphonies and choral works, collaborations with the National Opera Studio, 20th-century scores (e.g. Stravinsky, Le Sacre du Printemps, Schoenberg, Pierrot Lunaire and Bartók, Music for Strings Percussion and Celesta), and numerous contemporary works. Publications include chapters in French Music Since Berlioz (2006) and Vincent d’Indy et son temps (2006), and journals such as Music and Letters and Opera.
