Diana Hughes (Principal Clarinet)

Diana first started to learn to play the clarinet when she was 10.  Subsequently, at Durham University in the 1970s to study law she also joined in all the university’s orchestras.  After university she continued her musical studies at the Guildhall School of Music.

Diana has been working as a partner in a London firm of solicitors for the last 10 years.  Therefore, before joining the SSO as principal clarinettist, she used to play in the Lawyers Music Orchestra performing at various City of London and West End churches.  One performance during that time she particularly likes to remember is that of Mozart’s Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments.

Diana is married to Ian with two children.  Her daughter seems to follow in her musical footsteps as she is learning to play the piano.  In her spare time Diana enjoys gentle sports such as croquet, tennis, bridge and wine-tasting.

Her favourite composer is Mozart with Brahms coming a close second.  However, her best memory of an SSO concert was that of Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, which Diana liked because of the clever orchestration of the piece.
