Hazel Burnie (First Violin)

Hazel studied music first at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music, and then at Liverpool University, where she met David, the orchestra’s treasurer and valued member of the viola section.  During her time at Liverpool she was fortunate enough to study the violin under Levon Chilingirian, and chose performance as a prominent part of her music degree.

After teaching music and other subjects in a number of schools, she moved to London in 1982 and joined the SSO, as well as playing in a number of other local groups.  Over the next few years much of her time was taken up with her two sons, Chris and Rob, who are also keen musicians and both played with the SSO at various times.  During this time she continued teaching, gradually developing her interest in working with children with disabilities, and she currently works in a large primary school in Greenwich overseeing provision for children with special needs.

She is currently studying for an MA in Education through the Open University.  As well as music she enjoys a number of other hobbies, including swimming and walking.
