King Olaf is Elgar’s first full-length choral work, first
performed in 1896. An Introduction and Epilogues frame eight scenes (taken
from Longfellow) recounting how the crusading King Olaf brought Christianity
to the Norse lands. Despite its initial success (Elgar wrote in 1922 “it
always sweeps me off my feet”) there have been few full performances in
recent years, and none in London since 1985. |
